Call for beta

I'll write up a better, more informative post on what Chronica all covers, but for now, I'll just say it's a script for keeping track of update posts with categories, think along the lines of FanUpdate. I've tested the rough alpha stage, and had Lethe test it further, so a lot of the major bugs should be taken care of, but it would still be incredibly helpful for others to test this on their servers, to make sure everything works as intended.

So if you're willing to play tester, reply to let me know.

The more testing I can get, the more I can move this towards a stable release for all. :wink:

The things I need are:
  • testing the installation
  • bug/error reporting
  • feedback on the general usage and how things feel
  • suggestions for improvements
Future features:
  • Working timezone, right now it defaults to US West coast
  • Ability to delete entries
  • Better entry listing for control panel/edit
  • permalink/individual entry view
  • archive page with category list and entries per category count
  • a template function call to generate link list for category navigation
  • drafts

A live, working version can be seen here, on my update log.

This post will also be updated with relevant info.

***There's a error for people possibly on Dreamhost:

Code: Select all

Warning: ini_set(): session.configuration 'session.hash_function' must be existing hash function. whirlpool does not exist.

If you run into this error, then it means your host does not have the hash function "whirlpool" which I selected for security reasons. You can try a different hash function instead. Open /includes/config.php and find line 28, replace 'whirlpool' with the hash of your choice, maintaining the single quotes around the name.

For a list of the hashing algorithms you have installed, make a page (ex: test.php) and copy this:

Code: Select all

<?php
print_r(hash_algos());
?>

Load the page and check the results. In order of best to not so great security, I would recomment 'bcrypt', 'scrypt', 'pbkdf2', or 'sha512' but do not use 'md5'

If the error refuses to go away, remove or comment out line 28 all together. You can comment it out by adding // in front of it

Code: Select all

// ini_set('session.hash_function', 'whirlpool');

*raises hand* I'm sorry Masao, I'm out of my depth here. What would be a good hash in lieu of whirlpool?

I would do sha512, but if your host won't take it, then it's best to just use your host's default, so just comment (put // before) that line out.

I have installed Chronica successfully and have been messing around with it for a bit. One major issue I have noticed is that when I have an empty category with no entries written under it, it seems that the page won't include footer.php, but it works fine when I have at least one entry under the category. (Example: populated category and empty category).

Also, I have a stupid question: Where can I edit the pagination?

oooh that's probably because I've written this with the intention of at least 1 entry per category, and vice versa. I'll write a fix so that it handles empty categories!

And as of right now the pagination is in index.php, it's not too friendly for editing, but I plan on writing a friendly pagination control in the future.

Thanks for testing this!! :heart:
